I've been getting together some of my Cornish boards for a possible project down here next year and have been trying to date them a bit more accurately. This evolution chart above helps alot, and its Australian so the changes and dates here in Cornwall were about 6 months behind. All these shapes above were made in Cornwall in the 60s thro 80s , with the real rarities being d fin mals, v bottoms, early 70s twin fins and bonzers.
Dates below - give or take a year..
Space Gypsy 1977, Tris 1980, Graham Nile 1973, Aquatek 1983
Haven 1977, Ocean Magic 1981, Tris 1974, Wavekraft 1984
Vitamin Sea 1981, Piran 1977, Jolly Good 1976, Tris 1979
Martin Richards 1968, Bickers 1965, Bilbo 1966, Stuart 1968
To Craig Baird ( curator, SurfWorld, Oz , & who reads this blog ) : thanks for the use of your Surfboard Evolution Chart .
ReplyDeleteYes thanks Craig, and Tony too !
ReplyDeleteDora loves his vintage longboards but when he sees a great 70's/80's quiver he gets a weird feeling in his loins ;)
ReplyDeletehi al, splitting hairs maybe, or possibly i'm just grumpy that you've got 'ANOTHER' fine Tris - damn you - but i think that wavekraft is a few years later than 84. i'd need to think through the years , but i'm pretty sure its more around '86. it looks like one of the ones he was making at the time he was still shaping out of the old ocean magic place, before he set up wavekraft as a stand alone factory a year or so later. i'll see if i can find a pic of the ones i had at the time and email over.
ReplyDeletehi Gavin, good to see someone's reading this and checking up on me ! Let me know if i should change it, cheers Al
