Being a fan of old surfboards its natural to like the old cars too. VW campers and Morris travellers make great surf cars as do many others. These photos of Jack o neill show that as well as being a wetsuit icon and cool guy he was also a lover of the English sports car. This is a Jaguar xk140, one of the hippest cars of the 50s and one of thousands of sports cars the UK exported to the US in the 50s and 60s. Not the most practical surf wagon but as Jack shows you just stuff the board in the passenger side or if you've got a Shaun Tomson in the front then jam them in the rear. Job done.
These cars are now coming back to the UK in big numbers especially the Californian cars with no rust.
A Jaguar was the ride of choice for many hipsters across the pond. This was well before the 80s and 90s etc when jags became dull looking businessmens cars.
Just like old boards, old xk's are being pulled out of barns and sheds; this one hadnt been out since the mid 60s. When I was at school my friend had one of these in a barn, a red convertible xk150 which we used to play around in, its probably restored and worth a fortune by now...
stockings and surfboards, what more could a man want.

ReplyDelete“Move over, darling…” is now stuck in my head because of that commercial. Haha. Anyway, I agree with you. Jags now have the reputation as businessmen’s cars when it fact they used to be a symbol of freedom. Just like the good `ol VW, Jags are cars that represent the free spirits.

ReplyDelete"I absolutely love the blend of surf culture, vintage cars, and iconic personalities captured in this post! It's fantastic to see how Jack O'Neill's appreciation for old surfboards extends to classic cars, adding a nostalgic and stylish touch to his legacy. The mention of VW campers, Morris travelers, and the timeless Jaguar XK140 evokes a sense of adventure and a bygone era.

ReplyDeleteEmbracing the vintage surf culture goes beyond just surfboards; it extends to a love for classic cars as well. VW campers and Morris travelers, among others, exemplify the perfect synergy between surfing and cool rides.
