1984 Crab Island quad by Paul Connibear

 Alex  has just got hold of a nice pair of Crab Islands both made 1984, when the company was producing cutting edge Welsh boards with a strong local following. This one is a 5'9 x 20 1/2 jet fin quad by Paul Connibear with channels, flyers and a killer stars and stripes spray. The quality of finishing and design on Crab Islands made them stand out at the time and obviously makes them sought after now. Pros like Brad Hockridge and the legendary Carwyn Willams put Crab Islands in the public eye and got plenty of coverage in the mags .
Pete Crab started Crab Island in 1977 in Swansea, named after a right hand reef at Langland. He had a quality stable of shapers by the early 80s including Craig Hughes, Con, and Glen Winton. Would be good to hear some stories/ see some photos of the company back then if anyone's got any ?

    I got to surf this board before passing it on to Alex. A really lovely board its amazing what you find in the free ads. And fair play to Alex making a generous donation to SAS for both the crab island boards.

    Great post. I suggest you reach out to Pete directly. Maybe arrange an interview you could post online. I met him while surfing in Costa Rica this last winter and he is full of amazing stories. Pete's easily the nicest guy I've ever met. Pick up the phone, give him a call and tell him you'll buy him tea or lunch. Be prepared - he'll probably take you up on your offer and your mind will be blown.

    I've got an old Crab Island shortboard from the early 80s lying in the garage. Is it worth anything? It is a bit scraped and in need of TLC. It is red and orange and signed by Peter

    I have just picked up a Crab Island Board...signed by Pete crab...it’s a 6’2” x 18”...it has a feedings and needs some TLC and fins....any help appreciated
