Very nice Bilbo from around 1969 or possibly earlier which was Martin's dad's board, with the wild west style lettering. Really like the unusual colouring on this one, pea green on the deck and purple/mauve underside with the rough overlap of cloth showing. It also has one of the early Bilbo fins. The s-deck gets its name from viewing the board side on, with the obvious dome in the lower two thirds of the deck, designed to keep up volume.

Hi Al, Any idea where i can get a fin identical to this? My one's plastic which doesn't stand the test of time and has snapped round about 6 inches from the tip leaving just a stump - I'd love to get a replacement.

hi Jezzer, these early ones are quite hard to get hold of - either take the fin in to someone like Chris Jones in Newquay and he might have one, or have a look on US ebay for a similar looking Wave Set fin. Either way it could be expensive. Thats the bummer about having a rare old board !
ReplyDeleteYeah - I tried CJ a few years ago. Will have a look out for wave set fins - initial probing in the last 10 mins indicates you might be right. 150 dollars. ouch
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteI have a 60/70s Bilbo which I think is an S Deck. I'm hoping to sell it (moving house, can't take it). It's on secondhandsurfboards already & spoke to my local surf shop, but is there anywhere else you'd recommend?
Cheers
Sally
hi Sally, if you email me some photos and details at the above address I can post it on the blog if you like.Failing that there's always ebay
