Freedoms by Steve Harewood

-Nice pair of Freedoms from the 70s, firstly this mid 70s 7'2 singlefin from Alex's collection, clean lines and clean condition, a fun board for overhead waves, possibly made for sale in France as Alex thinks the bird was the logo of the Atlantico surf shop in Lacanau. Freedom had a strong prescence in France with a shop in Biarritz.

Dressed for a night on the town are top Jersey surfer Gordon Burgis, Freedom co founder Barry Jenkins, co founder of BSA Dave Grimshaw and last but not least Steve Harewood, late 60s. With guys like these its no wonder Jersey had a strong surf scene.

A good bit of flotsam

Here's a rare early 70s zippy sticks which Jim saved from complete destruction. He and his friend found it abandoned on the rocks at Porthleven about 20 years ago smashed up, deck de-lamed , nose gone and fin smashed in two. After restoration and tlc it looks and surfs great - a tale to warm the heart ! You don't see many of these early zippy sticks , the Gul collection has a very similar one. Shaped by Roger Cooper who grew up surfing the Isle of Wight and was south coast champion in 1969, before settling in south wales and starting his shaping business.

Ocean Magic stinger by Moony

Here's an Ocean magic from Alex's collection which is a real rare beauty from the original Redruth factory before they moved to Newquay. Single fin with Aipa style stinger from around 1976/7 shaped by Pete McAllum. A friend of mine picked one of these up at the car boot last year for £8 ! Love the early logo and writing which was soon altered. Alex took the board to Nigel who recognised it as being one of the early Redruth boards.

Tiki kneeboard and singlefin

Henry has sent pictures of two his Tikis with nice artwork. Above is an early 70s scooped deck kneeboard with parrot logo and acid wash with unusual flying birds on the underside. Henry says it would have originally had rope handles like Oz and US kneeboards of the time. Very psychadelic - it reminds me of Crystal voyager with Pink Floyd playing in the background !

Here's his really nice singlefin, probably mid to late 70s, made by Tiki with artwork signed by P & C Hewett. The Hewett brothers were talented artists who came over from Australia and worked at Tiki for a few years, working in the natural fantasy style as they called it, which got more angular as the 80s kicked in. An occasional look at the beauties which have gone through ebay recently, ably assisted by Pam and Yasmine.

Rare 5'6 late 60s transitional bilbo in great condition, still in Newquay.

Bill Bailey 1968 Bilbo 8'9 also in great condition, one for the serious collectors.

Another bilbo with a wide diamond tail and acid teardrop.

Plain early John Conway which made good money.

Early 80s cheyne horan, probably by Vitamin Sea I bought this one but haven't picked it up yet.

Graham Nile 6'2 which went under the radar on A1 surf.

Very clean Piran 6'10 probably by Martin Geary with unusual spiders web spray.

Lucy's quiver

Lucy has sent in some shots of her small but perfectly formed board collection, Creamed Honey and John Hall singlefins and a Cheyne Horan twinnie. One the left is the Creamed Honey by Kevin Cross, a much loved board which Lucy found near Brighton covered in a layer of magnolia gloss and has had well restored. The yellow cruiser is by John Hall of Tiki which had sat in a London garage for years and she picked up cheap off ebay. It has a Newquay malibu registration from 1973. On the right is a great looking early 80s Vitamin Sea cheyne horan model, numbered no 37 by Chris Jones. Thanks for sending them in Lucy.

Surf Scene

Surf Scene was a good mag which ran through the 80s, and concentrated on Cornwall and Devon plus comps up country and had a strong section on surf travel. It was edited by Chris Neal and Chris Hines of SAS fame. The only problem with it in the early 80s was that it had a lot about windsurfing before they got their own magazines, so in some surf scenes only half of it is about surfing. Still a classic mag though. Thanks to Sean for some of the covers.
